Ah... despite the long-lasting winter this year (and the drizzle I'm currently observing) it's finally starting to be summer, and just in time: Saturday was the last day of school. Well, actually, for me Friday was the last day. For many of my classmates it was a week ago.
You see, there are no finals for those who are not completing middle school or high school; once the teachers have decided that they have enough grades for each student (for many only 2-3, so you'd better watch your average!) class sort of fizzles. That's not to say that we haven't had our share of end-of-year stress-- most of the teachers decided to schedule multiple written and oral tests over the past couple of weeks-- but once we got to the last week of school everything was done and only those who had to recover their averages were subjected to interrogazioni. Those who had good grades had no reason to-- and many didn't-- come to school. And a third of the class was gone on internship. I spent the entire week at school coaching a friend on English and reading a book.
Regardless, even the most dedicated school-goers skipped Saturday. That's just what you do (at the least for high school); it's the tradition. Oh, did I mention that the other part of tradition states that all the truants, rather than sleeping in like any sane person would, go up to the park for a massive water fight? Fortunately the weather decided to behave and a good time was had by all-- at least until the police showed up (it's a long story).
Eventually everyone went home for lunch and the general atmosphere was that of any other Saturday afternoon: sleepy and empty. But that night we had the end-of-year party at my high school, sponsored by a hair salon and our favorite local restaurant, Ristorante Cavour (which handed out tiny slips of paper on which was hand-written in ballpoint pen "10% cavour"). I don't really have much to say about it except that it's the only school-hosted party I've ever been to that had alcoholic beverages at the bar-- not just beer, but stuff like vodka. Don't worry, though... I'm sure that everyone was being carded by the students running it!
