Grand Opening!

One of our favorite family restaurants is Ristorante Cavour: it offers the golden triad of low prices, extensive menu, and garden dining with a view! So we were excited to learn that they were the ones behind the mysterious doors in the piazza that were labeled..."Opening soon! Bar-cafe and gelateria!"

After much anticipation, the date arrived: midnight, July fourth. Now, I don't know about you, but for us there is always some confusion about what that actually means; at midnight the date changes! So did they mean the evening of July 3 moving into July 4? Or July 4 moving into July 5? Who's to know?

Not wanting to miss anything, Michael and I hung out in the piazza the evening of July 3 after our dinner dance. But, no.

In the meantime, they have been tantalizing us with benches and cushions and topiary and in general just making a CHARMING little spot right in front of the Duomo.

Last night was the night for the bar opening, and this afternoon was the gelateria's inaugural event. And boy, did people show up in great numbers to wish the family well! There were probably 400-500 out for the bar's opening last night, when they served pastries, drinks, prosecco, and more! Of course, Italians are like engineers: free food, and you can count on them to show up!

I have no idea how many this afternoon for the gelateria, but I can say that a good bit was spent on the party: everyone who came got a free gelato, snacks, drinks, ice cream sandwich made with a soft sweet roll (they called brioche) and powdered sugar on top, and more! I was thrilled to note that they've decided to go a different direction from Pianegiani: rather than count on the traditional flavors done really well, they're using unusual combinations (also done well) like pineapple basil, raspberry mint, and more! Yum.

Anyway, if I'm not here when you stop by in the dog days of summer, you'll know where to find me!

Love,
