Open House

It's very difficult to take photos inside a house when it actually has windows, and scale is nearly impossible to convey. However, we wanted to document the situation of the house as we have purchased it.
View of exterior door (portone) from the street

Crest above the portone

Opening the portone, you can see the archway

The cortile is large! Our parking spot will be to the right

This shows our house. Ground floor: door on the left ONLY.
First floor: balcony to left and window to its right.
Second floor, three windows
Attic, the two windows from the left.
The ground floor consists of two rooms: the first is somewhat dark but not terrible, and the second is nice and airy, thanks to a window at the end.

You can see the storage area (at the top of the photo) and the double hallway to the stairs

House door, opening! Double foyer with plenty of room for shoe racks, coats....

Second part of foyer, go up the steps!
Ascending the stairs, you reach the "day zone": kitchen/dining room combo off the landing, then a living room area. The current hallway from the living area to the guest room will become a powder room, and the guest room will be accessed via a newly-reopened doorway onto the landing.
In the center-right, you see the staircase to the main floor, along with its landing. The "soggiorno" is the dining room/kitchen
combo with balcony. The bottom-left is the family room, and the bottom-right is the guest bedroom. The guest bath is
denoted with "wc" and the little hallway next to the guest bath will become a powder room. At the top of the plan is the
staircase leading up to the family area, with a lovely, arched window.

Cooking fireplace! At least, it will be one...
Small but adequate living room
(a corner sofa will fit with plenty of room to spare for a few chairs)

Current hallway, will be a powder room

Guest room! Exposed beams! Bathroom door will be to the right
Day zone, bottom of stairs to family area

Going up the next flight of stairs, you reach the "family area": three bedrooms, currently one bathroom, but soon to be three, private terrace off master bedroom, and "tinello" (servants' hall) which will be a family room/library for winter evenings. The attic spaces are currently reached via an exterior stair, but a new interior stair will be carved out of the girls' room.
You enter from the top (in the photo), and the master bathroom is to your right. The master bedroom (with terrace) is to your left (on the top-right in photo, with adjoining terrace). In the middle are the tinello (our library) and girls' bedroom.
On the bottom is the girls' bathroom and the boys' bedroom.

Arriving at the family area!
Master bath, this will be the shower and toilet area

Currently a kitchen, this will be a master bath. Note ceiling height.
Master bedroom. Note large areas of plaster to be removed and replaced due to mildew

Family library. The steps to the attic will originate in the wall to the left of the fireplace.

Boys' room. Ceiling is about 3,65 m high!
Little closet carved into the space
We will add a bathroom in this corner (it backs up to girls' bathroom)
accessed from boys' bedroom.
The master bedroom has a terrace with a delightful view. The terrace has nasty exterior steps to access an amazing attic space, but we're not allowed to replace them or enlarge the upper landing (sadly!). We're just leaving them on the theory that maybe in the future we could replace the upper landing with something nicer. In any case, the attic offers lots of storage space and room for a lovely office for Michael!
Essentially just two attic rooms!

Part of Michael's office

Approximately 7'2"
at its highest point, I think

Additional storage area, this will also be the delivery point of the interior stairs

There's daylight even in the attic!

Clearly, there's a lot to be done! By our count, all flooring, electrical and plumbing systems, plaster remediation for mildew in numerous spots, window repair/replacement, interior staircases, two large archways (including in a load-bearing wall), one kitchen, and 4.5 baths. Phew! They say it will be 6 months, but I suspect that Christmas and other holidays will get in the way. We'll keep updating as we make progress.

Love,

Alexandra
