Birthday Swim Meet

Busy weekend for the Hook clan: Saturday, James had his birthday and today, he and Florence had a swim meet in Umbertide (a town about an hour north from Todi).

James's meal was my best attempt at barbecue: we got rolls made especially for us from the panineria (they wouldn't accept any money), I'd previously cooked pork until it was dead, then drenched it in homemade barbecue sauce. We had greens and corn on the side. Yum!

The cake was fun to make: using our Dutch sprinkles, it was orange with chocolate specks, and an orange buttercream frosting with crunchy citrus sugar on top.

Before cake, though, we had to play "Settlers by Skype" with Eleanor and Matthew. This is a way we have devised to play Settlers of Catan (a strategy game) long-distance: we each set up identical boards, have Skype on, set a place for absent players so we can keep turn order, and declare our moves. Each board is modified as needed. If we have to draw cards across the Atlantic, those not included just close their eyes to allow the transaction to take place. Matthew won this time, by a landslide!

Michael and I took the two to the swim meet this morning, and enjoyed having the time together. Florence placed second in all her events (50 back, 100 free, and 200 free relay), while James just enjoyed the experience (it's his first meet in 5 years!). The pool was really lovely.

Next weekend, we plan to continue the birthday celebrations by going to the thermal baths!!!

Love,
