Doily, anyone?

Michael hates doilies.  With a passion.  He considers them useless frit to dust around; worse: frit that also has to be washed and then ironed.  Bleah.

Imagine his thrill to see that I have completed my first lace project -- a doily!  I was laughing with Laura (my teacher, the merceria lady's daughter) about this, and we've decided that the doily should be Michael's coaster at dinner.  He'd like that: a coaster is practical, after all...

My new project; how could he resist a heart, after all?

I'm learning this openwork stitch; neat, huh?
Love,

Alexandra

p.s. Grandma Dot Wheeler sent me some pictures of bobbin lace makers in Spain who had 100s of bobbins on a project.  Made my 12 look rather unimpressive...
