La Bohème came to Todi! Michael was out of town, so I booked a ticket just for myself. It was a school night (Friday) after all!
The opera was in the local theatre across the street from our house, and I had a box that I shared with two other couples. Getting there early (meaning, at the time stated on the ticket) meant that I scored the best seat in the box, which didn't hurt at all. Interestingly, there were a TON of young people in the audience (not with their families, but on dates or as groups of friends).
The orchestra had about 40 members in the pit, and (during the crowd scene...second act?) I counted upwards of 50 singers on stage. The sets were some of the most elaborate I've seen, and the costumes were great. Bearing in mind, of course, that the cast members are depicting a life of poverty...so it feels odd to say that the costumes were lush. Kind of like Les Miz, right?
Anyway, a great time was had by all (funny note...the tenor playing Rodolfo was tiny, and the soprano playing Mimi could easily have been an Amazon...so they did look rather out of scale with each other!), and we all cried at the end.
What I didn't cry about, though, was the price: about $30 for the ticket.
Humming cheerfully,
Alexandra
