A few Sundays ago, the boys were confirmed in the Duomo...absolutely lovely, as one can expect. I include a few photos for your enjoyment. Florence was James's sponsor, and Antonio Mannaioli (the patriarch of a lovely local family with four kids(!)) was Jeremy's. After the ceremony, we all had lunch outside in a local pizzeria...yum!
While we were preparing mentally for Mass as we were walking over (via Pianegiani, for those who will be puzzled by my geography), Michael and I heard the buzz buzz buzz of small engines. We stopped short in the Piazza Garibaldi, which was completely blocked off.
Much to our amusement, we discovered that there was an obstacle course set up for Vespas! As I found out later, it was called a "Gimkana" (gymkhana, yes?), which I found even more amusing. We saw umpteen (mostly) men crouched down on these diminutive scooters describing spirals, doing the limbo under poles, going up ramps, down again, and slaloming. All in all, the course was the most compact obstacle course I've ever seen. The contestants typically took about 2 1/2 minutes to complete a course that covered MAYBE 900 square feet in all.
The little paint lines were to show the route |
