Italian Barbershop Quartet X 10

It was Jim and Sharon's last night with us, and we'd seen a free concert advertised in the Teatro Comunale...given that they'd never seen the theater, it seemed like a reasonable way to finish out their visit. I mean, if it was bad, we could always leave at the intermission, right?

We showed up at 9:25 for the concert that was intended to start at 9:30, but the doors hadn't yet opened...no problem, we just hung out in the hallway for a few moments. When we were allowed in, the three of us chose our seats, and a few minutes later (after several introductory speeches), the curtains parted to show a double-horseshoe of about 40 men.

They opened their mouths, and we were transported with delight! They were fantastic! And funny! And quaint! And we loved it so much that I TEXTED Michael and the others and told them to get over ASAP to listen to them. I can't even believe it myself, but I really did pull out my phone to send messages.

I didn't know what to expect before we went, but based on the poster, I'd thought maybe the Italian version of an oompahpah concert, complete with accordion. And it sort of was. But it also really reminded me of the tight harmonies of the American barbershop quartets for some reason. The vocal range was really amazing. And vocal noises, too! Fun! I've attached a Youtube video of them just to supplement your imagination, but of course it can't come close to a live performance.

Love,

Alexandra
