Eleanor arrived in Minnesota to meet Matthew's parents only to discover...a package from Michael! Apart from other little gifts, there was:
Right, because they needed something to do?
They have started and have been sending regular updates. Although "only" 500 pieces, Eleanor reports that it's the hardest thing ever and she has been adding to her Shakespearean curses.
Her first report:
And, no, the troops back home were unable to do any more than scratch our heads in puzzlement (ouch).
We now (a day later) have this:
Gah! Ciphers! QR codes! What next?
After a false lead, we settled on a hint from Michael and just solved using a simple substitution (that's for the letter part, anyway). We still don't know what the colors (or cards!) mean, so that will have to come out later.
We'll update this post after a while to allow anyone who wants to to have a crack at it. Plus, I have some at home who haven't solved it yet!
Love,
Alexandra
p.s. The cypher text (simple substitution), when decoded, reads, "Black and white are alright if they don't cause a fight, but red and green are much more keen when you want a pretty scene. And what of gold, so carefully doled, at each one a new word behold! If you're not bowed by this ode, you will solve the Christmas code." And we have no idea about the cards (yet).
The QR code leads to http://www.hookchristmaspuzzle2016.org/itsstartingtolookalotlikechristmas.html; if you take off the extension and go to http://www.hookchristmaspuzzle2016.org, there is a list of cities that promises to be intriguing.
